Movies and Onions

James and I watched "The Constant Gardener" Friday night. Unbelievably good movie. I didn't follow every minute detail because there just seemed to be way too many characters involved to keep it all straight. However, the gist of the movie left me floored when it was over. I can't fathom the kind of morals a person or a group of people have that allows them to so ruthlessly exploit another person or another group of people.

I love movies that yank you out of the pretty bubble you're living in and smack you and say, "Hey! Wake up! This is what's really going on. Why are you ignoring it?" They're depressing movies but god, they're just so good.

I won't get into the conversation that James and I had after the movie was over, because there was so much said and so much to still think about. I won't even get into what the movie was about. Don't want to ruin it for anyone who happens to wander across this post. Just watch it.

Moving on. James made bread and butter pickles last night! At one point he forced me to leave the kitchen because I was hovering, but I couldn't help it! I'm just too excited about them. I didn't try one last night because I had already brushed my teeth. Definitely having one with breakfast this morning, though. He used his Grandma's recipe. He's so nostalgic about his Grandma's pickles. I'm glad he finally go the recipe from his Mom.

We had skirt steak for dinner last night. I'll never buy another skirt steak again unless at the same time, I'm buying all the other fixings for beef tacos or fajitas. I just marinated this steak and broiled it. I knew there was a lot of fat in the meat but I didn't think it would be a big deal to trim it once it was on my plate. WRONG! Big deal. I only had three small slices of the meat, but it took longer to trim the fat than it did to eat the entire meal. And yeah, maybe I'm exaggerating, but at least now you know what a pain it was. If we'd been having tacos for fajitas, I wouldn't have bothered trimming the fat. It would have been out of sight, out of mind, wrapped in a tortilla. Oh well. You live, you learn.

Mandi, we also had your orzo salad last night. LOVE IT! I've had it twice when you've made it and god, it's just so good! Thanks so much for finding that recipe. We also had baked onion rings. Real onions. Real homemade onion rings. Baked because that's loads healthier than frying. My like/hate relationship with onions comes down to the onion of the moment. The bit that's in my mouth at the time. Onion rings? Most I hate because they're cooked so quickly that the onion still crunches. Some have some funky onion flavor that's just awful. Last night's onion rings, at least the three small ones I had, were the most amazing onion rings I've ever tried. The onion was baked long enough that the texture was much different than a raw onion. No crunch. It was kind of on it's way to onion paste. And the panko bread crumbs plus baking them make a world of different in the breading. Whether it's crispy or not. I've never had or seen onion rings that actually crunch like potato chips when you bite them because the breading is so crispy. Loved them!!

Progress!

Happy birthday to Papaw. He would have been 83 today. James and I are going out for an ice cream cone tomorrow night to celebrate. I'm getting butter pecan, Papaw's favorite. :-) I love you, Papaw!

Not sure if this is one of those crazy weight fluctuating things, but I've lost 4 pounds since Sunday. YAY!!! The easiest way to say it is I'm on a diet. But it's not a diet so much as keeping strict records of what and how much I eat. I'm using www.sparkpeople.com (thanks to James for showing it to me). It's so easy and has been so helpful! I love it! I hope I can keep it up!

It's been a while so I'm going to jump from subject to subject.

So I created this thing ages ago. It's not that I don't have time for it, I just never think about it. I had a LiveJournal once, so you'd think I'd be good at this sort of thing. Oh well. Just you wait. This will be the first post in a year and it will be another several months or more before the next post.

I'm discovering that buying a house is one of the most insane things to ever do. I love it, because James and I will have a house soon. But geez! All the stuff you have to learn and read and sign. And then something changes so you have to learn more and read more and sign more.

Over the years I've accumulated a mountain of recipes ripped and cut from magazines or printed from emails I no longer have. My current project (and it will remain current forever and ever amen) is putting all these into my own recipe book. Just a standard school binder with dividers. I like it this way, with the dividers, so that I can make my own categories. I've never heard of a recipe book that has a section just for potatoes. Yeah yeah, I know there are potato recipe books, but that's not what I'm going for. In my own recipe book, I can separate the soup section from the salad section! HA! I can have an autumn section, and yes, even a pumpkin section! Desserts are currently sub-categorized by chocolate, fruit and everything else. I'm proud of this project, as simple and mindless as it is. It's organization and I
love organization!
